Central to our approach is a strong focus on regenerative and organic farming practices. This commitment not only nurtures healthy vines but also supports the broader ecosystem. Our terroir, a glacially-derived sandy loam soil, is naturally well draining but largely devoid of beneficial organic matter. Well-rooted vines require a complex β€œvillage” of symbiotic organisms (bacteria, fungi, and protozoan species), creating optimal growing conditions. We employ a full time soil scientist who oversees our regenerative practices, composting, testing and other amending practices.

Some other unique elements we are proud to share include our use of irrigation and fertigation techniques to optimize vine health, an innovative bird deterrent laser system, which protects the fruit without harmful chemicals or netting and lastly, our recent adoption of concrete barrels that enhance wine quality through natural temperature regulation and decreased evaporative loss.

We believe these features reflect our values and craftsmanship and will help visitors and wine lovers alike appreciate the care and expertise behind every bottle of Gilchrist wine. We are in the process of integrating this content into our website in a dedicated section, making it easier for everyone to learn about how our grapes are grown and how we steward the land.

At Gilchrist Farm+Winery, we often hear from visitors who assume that our wines are made from grapes purchased elsewhere. To clarify and celebrate the heart of our operation, we are committed to showcasing the full journey β€” from vineyard to bottle. Here are some photos of our lush vineyards, the grapes as they grow, the harvest process, and other aspects of farm life, highlighting our dedication as grape growers.

Sustainable Farming

Seek out the full experience at Gilchrist Farm+Winery, where the beauty of the vineyard and the charm of the farm come together to create a unique destination and witness Sustainable Farming in action. We implement soil regeneration methods through organic inputs, including: spent beer mash, grape must, vegetable/scrap recycling, wood chips from logging, compost teas; vermiculture, and low-growing perennials in vine rows. Our Sustainable Farming also includes:

  • composting paper products

  • foraging for ramps, morels, etc.

  • forest management

  • mechanical weeding-no herbicides

  • limiting fungicides to only essentials

  • natural pesticides or hand removal

  • irrigation/fertigation to limit waste

  • laser bird deterrence

  • concrete and steel fermentation to limit evaporative loss

  • seasonal dining creations from farm-to-table produce, paired perfectly with our handcrafted wines
